The children's Book Week character dress up day was a big success. The children came dressed as a variety of different characters and enjoyed hearing many stories throughout the day from books that their friends brought in.
Building a love of literature can only happen if we consistently engage children with books through reading to them, and allowing them time to look at books independently. Children gain so much from you when you read out aloud. They remember the warm, snuggly feeling of being with their favourite adult as they listen, they learn book handling skills and they begin to understand what you are looking at when reading. Your expression as you read is also important. Children learn many reading skills through listening to your voice. Let's not forget the topics that arise as a result of the books that are read and the stories children tell that are sparked from reading.
The children that come to Lindfield Montessori are read to at least twice per day, and we know that this provides so many supports to their learning and development. We have an extensive library of over 1000 books and there are always more wonderful books being written to add! We are very excited to be able to share this privilege of an exciting library, with less fortunate children and communities. Through the Dymocks Books for Kids Charity, we are contributing over $500 through our communities' generous donations to the purchase of books to children in disadvantaged communities in Australia. In return, the charity will give back an equal amount of children's books to Lindfield Montessori as a thank you.
